Travelers Tips When Visiting Guanacaste Costa Rica

Always carry with you a photocopy of your passport and leave the original in the safe deposit box of your hotel with other important documents and/or belongings.
Keep all your belongings in sight. When traveling on a bus or any other means of transportation, always, always keep your belonging close to you.
Know your destination and have a planned route of travel.
Use only public or private bank or know exchange booths to change your money, do not do it in public places or with strangers.
Do not allow any unknown person to get very close to you under any circumstances, as it may be an attempt to rob you of your belongings.
If you are told by a passing motorist that something is wrong with your vehicle or if you notice that you are being followed, don’t stop. Drive to the nearest public area, and if needed ask for police assistance.
The signals of emergency or police vehicle are blue or red. Do not stop for flashing headlights alone.
If you get lost find a public place such as gas service station to check your map or ask for directions.
Keep windows up and doors locked while driving, as well as when leaving the vehicle parked.
Always park in well-lit areas and check surrounding area before entering your vehicle.
Remember you should keep valuables in the trunk, locked glove compartment or out of sight. DO NOT pick up hitchhikers.
Do not leave the keys in your vehicle or the motor running while using an ATM or at public phone.
If you go downtown carrying a shoulder bag or camera hold it in front of you and close to your body, be sure it is securely closed.
If you are challenged by hostile individual, DO NOT RESIST, do what they ask. Your belongings are not worth your life or serious injury.
If you use a taxi be sure to verify it complies with the establish requirements, such as yellow triangles, on the side doors and taximeter in the front. If you are going out at night, ask the hotel receptionist to call you a cab from a reputable company.
If your vehicle is bumped from behind, do not stop on the roadway or side road. Drive to the nearest public area and ask for the police assistance.
If you are using an automatic cashier, be sure the area is well lit. Count your money inside the vehicle with your window closed.
In the case of your credit card being stolen, proceed to cancel it immediately.
If you suspect you are being followed, go to the nearest public area and call the police.
In Costa Rica we protect our children. Sexual intercourse with children or adolescents under 18 is a crime punishable by law. To deal in drugs is illegal.
