Hola Divers of Guancaste Costa Rica
When I got my head for the first time under water on a dive site off the coast of Playas del Coco, I was unlucky: Poor visibility and cool thermo cline pretty much made me miss the dice, expecting the crystal clear conditions of other destination I was diving at before. Asking my Dive Master about this, he simply reminded me of what we’ve just seen: White tip Reef sharks, several Eagle- and Sting Rays and huge, dense clouds of schooling fish that we were swimming through… and thinking about this, in almost 10 years of diving, I had never seen such amounts of life in a single dive.
The Papagayo Gulf is without doubt Costa Rica’s premium dive destination with its numerous local dive sites suffering great and varied diving for all levels and perfect conditions to make your first steps into a fantastic world of weightlessness. The nutrient rich, ever changing waters, the beautiful and irregular coastline with it is sheltered bays and exposed Island as well as major cold-water currents circulating along the Americans attract the enormous array of marine life to make almost every dive an unforgettable series of underwater sceneries!
Playa s del Coco and its adjacent beaches is the center for diving in this area. Seven full-service dive operators will take you every day of the year among more than 20local sites that line the gulf from north to south.
Now I’ve been diving here since almost two years and still discover new species of fish and other reef-creatures on every dive! From outstandingly beautiful Nudibranches and occasional Harlekin-Shrimps, over spectacular formations of schooling fish to the breathtaking giants of the oceans such as Manta Ray, Whale – Sharks and even Whales!
It’s also the perfect place for trips to the Catalinas further south, where Manta Rays seasonally circle around the Islands and schooling Eagle, devil and Cownose-Rays can be encountered year-round. For the big thrill you can also book trips into the Santa Rosa National Park to the bat Islands about 40 mile/ 60 km north, where Bull-Sharks congregate and unbeliable amounts of schooling fish seek shelter close to the reefs from other hunting pelagic fish like Tuna, Jacks, Mahi Mahi, Wahoo, Makerel and occasionally even marlin and Sailfish!
