Surfing around Playas del Coco

Playas del Coco
What you need to know
A quick internet about surfing in Costa Rica identifies Playas del Coco as the best place to stay when planning a trip to Witch’s Rock and Ollie’s Point. After talking with Carlos Barrera, President of Asociacion Ecopangueros Turisticos del Golfo de Papagayo, the reasons for this endorsement are obvious.
Several years ago fourteen forward thinking individuals native to Costa Rica and living in Coco banded together, worked with the Ministerio  de Ambiente y Energia (MINAE), and created the Asociacion. This action gave the members the legal right to escort groups to Witch’s Rock and Ollie’s Point, both located within Santa Rosa National Park.  And, at this time, the Asociacion, headquartered at Roca Bruja, Surf Operation, in Playas del Coco is the only association legally permitted to escort surfing tour in the park. In addition to being leaglly sanctioned to offer tours, Roca Bruja, Surf Operation affords its clients numerous safety benefits, conveniences, and outstanding surfing opportunities.
Every captain, employed by Roca Bruja has taken survival training and is equipped with the knowledge of what to do in a medical emergency. Every boat is outfitted with a radio for communications, fire extinguishers, life jackets, cellular phones, and first aid kit. Each boat sports a fuel-efficient, environmentally friendly 4 stroke motor made by Suzuki, Yamaha or Johnson. Boats are used on a rotating basis and are serviced regularly. The Operation is insure, has an office which is easily located about 50 meters from the beach, and employs personnel who are fluent in English and Spanish. A website (www.costaricasurftrips.com) and email are available so that surfers can learn about the Operation and reserve a particular date and time even before arriving in Costa Rica.
At the time, individuals can surf Witch’s Rock and Ollie’s Point independently; however, anyone planning a surf trip shoul keep in mind that theses sights will be available only through commercial operators in the near future.
Surfing tours leave from Coco, even if you are staying in Tamarindo, Nosara, Playa Negra, or Playa Grande, between 5:30- 9:00 am and are back on shore at approximately 3:30 to ensure a safe return before nightfall. Witch’s Rock, located off Playa Naranjo, is a 45 minutes boats ride from Coco and can accommodate approximately 35 surfers at 5 different surfing points. Ollie’s Point at Playa Potrero, is abou an hour and fifteen minutes from Coco, and provides excitement for approximately 25 surfers. Each tour includes these two sights and a third lesser known spot, Laberinto, for advanced surfers.
In addition to great waves, some of the other highlights along the way include volcanoes, dolphins, turtles, and a countless number of birds flying overhead.  Berberage and mixed fruits are provided. The coast is $255 per boat and each boat accommodates a maximum of five people. Each surfer shares the cost of the boat and pays the $6 per person entrance fee collected by Santa Rosa national Park.
Roca Bruja, Surf Operations open from 6:00-6:00 and although its main business is surfing tours it does offer based, snorkeling, and sport fishing excursions. Roca Bruja rents surf boards and boogie boards and will arrange surfing lessons for beginners. Lessons are given in Tamarindo and, for a $75 fee, beginners receive transportation to and from Tamarindo, a 5 hour lesson, refreshments, and board rental.
Surfing tour can be combined with any of the activities listed above to create one or more days sun-filled enjoyment. Although you can catch a wave any month, June-September is the best month while October, generally rainy, is dangerous and is not recommended. Several years ago fourteen visionaries has a novel idea. Today that vision is a reality. Today surfers from all over the world rely on merchants of Playas del Coco for lodging, food, entertainment, and class a surfing. Today, surfers from all over the world begin their trip by contacting Roca Bruja, Surf Operation. Roca Bruja, Sur Operation can be reached online at www.costaricasurftrips.com.
